 Once a Sinner, Always ...

The Bible says that men once were

The hope of God for perfection.

Then women came along for sure,

And so the who we were was done.

Did not take long, women and men

Disappointed God's hope in them,

Committed in front of God - sin.

Quite irked, God was quick to condemn

This experiment as not much worth.

And so God of a judgement mind

Let the sinners remain on Earth,

But on borrowed time for humankind.

Who men and women once were must,

Because of sin, die and turn dust.

 Goddess of Gold

Freya, the Norse goddess of gold,

Hoarded as much gold as she could.

Beseeched by mortals, all were told

By Freya it would not be good

For gold to be in mortal hands.

Gold should be possessed just by her.

Freya grabbed gold from seas and lands.

Frustrated, her husband, Odur,

And the rest of her family

Left Freya to be all alone

With just her gold for company,

Truth the goddess came to bemoan.

Freya lost all love, the true worth.

She wept gold tears upon the Earth.

 In Residence

The Milan Royals we're sometimes called,

The red kite raptor birds we be.

And so a nest we have installed

High up in Milan, Italy,

Atop a "tree house" building that

Some humans built, covered in trees.

It is a perfect habitat

For mate and me to shoot the breeze.

We "rent" a tree on penthouse floor,

And watch the humans watching us,

As back and forth from nest we soar.

Building allows kids - that's a plus.

So next time in Milan, look up,

And we might be looking down, yup.

 By Myself

I've always loved myself a lot,

And so expect all to love me.

But not too much love have I got

From others who just seem to be

Expecting my love in return.

For me, love is a give and take.

The others giving love should yearn,

And not have all of that heartache

When I do not reciprocate,

Taking their love should be enough.

They don't seem to appreciate

My feelings on this shared love stuff.

By myself, I stopped the search of

Somebody more than me to love.

 Game Called

A lovely maiden, I came

To a village high on a hill.

It was a time and place for game,

To hone upon my gaming skill.

At first the villagers met me

With friendliness, but soon did change.

There was a wise priest who did be

Suspicious that something was strange.

I was locked in a room of stone,

While the villagers went to pray.

The truth of me was not yet known,

And I decided not to stay.

The devil, I did cast a spell.

My demons came for me from hell.

 Meka Peeka - LP Zoo

Pygmy slow loris, Meka, is

Playing a game of peek-a-boo,

And knows that in her hiding biz,

Here at home in Lincoln Park Zoo,

She's got advantage of dim light

That glows in reddish tint so that,

Since she's a lady of the night,

She's comfy in her habitat.

So Meka makes her choice to hide

In a round tube, just fits her size,

And she waits patiently inside,

Looking out with her great big eyes.

To find Meka, a human must

Wait a while for eyes to adjust.

 Forgive Forever?

Jesus did choose to sacrifice

To be savior of humankind.

On crucifix he paid the price.

He prayed that Father be of mind

To let the Holy Spirit stay

Upon the Earth and to forgive

All humankind for sinful way.

Jesus did die  so we might live

To carry on the human race,

The sacred sacrament to heed

So as to receive divine grace,

And praise this second chance indeed.

It's been two thousand years since then,

And humankind still lives in sin.

 Jesus Connection

I try to live my life the way

That I believe Jesus did teach.

When there's conflict I need to pray,

And not be too hasty to preach

To others how I think they should

Live their lives in the way I live.

I need to keep in mind that good

Is being able to forgive

Others for not living up to

Whatever standards I expect.

I should not judge what others do.

I should just try best to connect.

Maybe I'll open a closed mind

If I empathize and be kind.

 Positioning - LP Zoo

The Jamaican iguanas do

Post themselves in positions that,

Here at home in Lincoln Park Zoo,

They can view their whole habitat.

Woody and Lizzie know time is

For their keeper to bring a snack

For the pair to do snacking biz.

Their four eyes do look forth and back,

Each one ready to hiss heads up

When keeper's coming is in sight.

The two will then head that way, yup,

To snack upon a snack delight.

Keeper watch duty 'twixt and 'tween,

A Lizzie and Woody routine.

 Jealous Wife

A long time back in Tennessee

My big sister worked in a bank.

A red haired beauty she did be.

And many a male sure did thank

When they got in her teller line.

Some would get in her line a lot

To get a close look and to pine

Of fantasies, cuz she was hot.

And no doubt, Sis did like to flirt.

One guy named Carl a lot showed up.

Apparently his wife was hurt,

And later sang about it, yup.

Back then Dolly was just a teen,

Sang of my sister in "Jolene."

 Artful Disappearer

1971, a man

Hijacked a plane and then he got

Two hundred grand in ransom plan.

He disappeared and still is sought.

He parachuted from the plane

With the money and disappeared

Into some wilderness domain.

In artful moves he persevered,

And into Canada he went,

And started up a whole new life,

Decades of prosperity spent

Happily with children and wife.

Till he died, a great life we had.

"D.B. Cooper", he was my Dad.

 Not "Egg"sactly a Nursery Rhyme

Humpty Dumpty sat in his chair

And ordered  a hooker online.

When the hooker did arrive there,

She saw Humpty was no goldmine.

"Egg" cited, Humpty said he'd charge

Her service on his credit card.

After all, he was grade A large.

His card declined did hit him hard.

He jumped into the hooker's arms,

Thinking somehow he could "egg"spect

To shell by with his sexy charms..

He and the hooker did connect.

The hooker hit with left hook, yup,

And Humpty Dumpty got cracked up.

 Job Distraction

I am up in the studio.

The painter's got me sitting in

A chair looking out a window.

Of course I want to scratch my chin.

This is the first time that I've sat

For this painter who is well known,

So shouldn't do anything that

Puts him into an upset zone.

At least I'm able to look out

The window so not be too bored.

Gonna be a long day no doubt.

Oh, oh, trouble's coming, oh Lord!

I see outside my brother is

Doing some "make me giggle' biz.

 Most Famous Pixie

When Peter Pan tale first be told,

Tinker Bell, a fairy did be.

Then came Disney, lo and behold,

A pixie she was suddenly.

There is confusion 'twixt and 'tween

A pixie or a fairy one.

Some say that fairies are quite mean,

While a pixie's more into fun.

Some do opine that Walt did choose

To turn Tink to a pixie so

To better match the childlike views

He wanted his work to bestow.

Pixie or fairy - Tinkerbell?

So far she's chosen not to tell.

 Anti Pollutionists Fired Up

The Cuyahoga River, I

Through the city of Cleveland flow.

Industry pollution was why

A fire hazard in Ohio

I became over years of times.

Chemicals did get dumped in me,

Such dumping not a legal crime.

In 1969 did be

An oil slick in my waters that

Got sparked by a passing railcar,

And burned the railroad bridge down flat.

This brought in "greenies" from afar.

The humans got the message, yup,

And since I have been well cleaned up.

Piano player, Owlton John,

I found a music teacher that

Is teaching me to get it on

In my shared songbird habitat.

Though I cannot sing worth a hoot,

I've got a keen ear to play keys,

Enabling me to execute

All genres on the ivories.

Some classical, some blues, some pop,

Some country and some rock and roll,

Some gospel, some jazz, some hip hop,

I play with all my heart and soul.

My music teacher says of me

How very talon - ted I be.

 Carrot Cake

The best carrot cake ever made,

My Grandma had the magic touch.

Each cake was a loving crusade

Made from scratch, Grandma went to such

Efforts with her arthritic hands

To make with tender loving care

And patience perfection demands,

Always a masterpiece to share.

From her garden fresh carrots came,

Grated and added to the mix

As star, giving the cake its name.

The batter, oft times I got licks.

The most delicious food intake -

That first bite of my wedding cake.

Old Faithful is a geyser that

Got its name from eruptions high

In its Yellowstone habitat

Hundreds of feet into the sky,

In a predictable time frame,

Currently ev'ry one to two

Hours, giving its claim to fame.

Each eruption tends to last through

One to five minutes spewing out

Thousands of gallons of real hot

Boiling water up and about.

Lots of gusto this geyser's got.

How faithful will this geyser stay?

Just have to have faith day to day.

 Growing Up With ...

My child is growing up so fast.

In many ways she's just like me,

Reminding me of my times past.

A little stinker I could be.

But my parents helped me along,

Taught me the choice to do a right

When I was caught doing a wrong.

I've tried to give my child insight

That ev'ry day, choices be made.

And when we err as humans do,

Older and wiser can give aid.

Growing up's hard, but up I grew.

I hope that when I'm dead and gone,

I'll be in my child and live on.

The Persian carpet flower is

The informal  name this plant got,

Because my flower looks, gee whiz,

Like a fancy carpet a lot.

Mostly in Africa is where

My kind in the wild can be found.

We like lots of sun and dry air,

And grow best in the desert ground.

I've got no leaves but armed with spines.

Bisexual my flowers be

Showing off in ornate design.

Worldwide gardens do display me.

Humans don't like my carrion smell,

But bugs do, and pollinate me well.

To rid myself of feeling blue.

But then a pop as life can do.

A bottle of Cabernet red

To share a toast to the road ahead,

Leaving cosmos clutter behind.

From the dark bleak of now I see

Ahead, sun shining on the trees.

Better future does beckon me

To dance to life's simplicities.

Where I'm going, I don't know where.

I guess I'll know when I get there.

Is what an artist chose to make

As a fine topiary pick

To sculpt two trees for artful sake.

One short, one taller - perfect to

Reshape to tribute penguin pride,

Though likely no penguins will view.

The artist does a capture of

Mama feeding her chick a fish,

Expression of maternal love

That each and ev'ry child would wish.

 Paradise Lost

I found myself in paradise,

Hanging out with angels above.

For me it was too high a price

To have to always be in love.

To understand love did require

That there be hate also as choice.

For love I had little desire,

And so I came to heed hate's voice,

Telling me that with hate I could

Have any and all I did yearn,

Which was all bad and nothing good,

And so I was the first to burn.

God said, as from heaven I fell,

"Lucifer, you can go to hell."

 Second Opinion

Doc told me that my pain was due

To drinking too much alcohol,

Even though when drunk I seem to

Not be feeling this pain at all.

Then I told Doc that I had heard

That sunlight could restore my youth.

Whereupon Doc gave me the word,

No, I was too long in the truth.

I pondered Doc's words long and hard.

I needed to test to conclude,

Went out in my sunlit back yard,

Standing all old and drunk and nude.

If you see me, leave me alone.

I'm doing research on my own.

 Truth Told

I was at a job interview

For a job I really did want.

The last question he asked of me,

"What's your greatest weakness that might"

"Make this job harder to perform?"

"I always tell the truth," I said.

The interviewer did inform

This trait should put me in good stead.

And so the truth I had to share,

Most often played by players male

Who are into some macho biz

Of taking a chance on the scale

Of five out of six chambers in

To the shot macho player's grief.

However the game is resolved,

 Mission Possible

The U.S.A. decided to

Send a team to the moon so that

Current powers that be could do,

With permanent base habitat,

A claim of moon for U.S.A.

So we landed successfully,

And set up for a lengthy stay.

Three other astronauts and me,

We've been here now a month or so.

And then did come this fateful day.

Flashes of light on Earth did show.

The four of us began to pray.

Houston, we have a problem, yup,

We're watching you and Earth blow up.

 Llanwddyn

Llanwddyn, Wales, first village be

In early 1880's sank,

As a reservoir completely

Submerged the village under tank,

Cuz English city, Liverpool

Needed more fresh water and so

The English Parliament did rule

Llanwddyn village had to go

To a new village which was built

Below the dam some miles away.

Liverpool city felt no guilt.

Llanwddyn village had no say.

Townspeople moved - what else to do!

 A Dirty Job

I watch my three year old outside.

He told me he wanted to find

Buried treasure he knew did hide

In the back yard, and set his mind

That he was gonna dig until

That buried treasure he undug.

I figured it a harmless thrill,

Maybe he'd come across a bug.

I watched him go after his goal,

Both hands digging, the dirt did fly.

Quickly did come a good sized hole.

In headfirst went my little guy.

I'm off to digging digger up.

I'm sure a bath is coming, yup.

Brings a dimension to my high

I've heard tales told that an owl is

Just about the best to appear

When one is engaged in drug biz.

It means I'm in the highest sphere

Of being guided to all wise

If I try hard to concentrate,

And I focus on the owl's eyes,

The ecstasy can be so great.

Slowly my owl does come to frown,

As slowly my high does come down.

 The Third Road

Three roads diverged in my lifehood.

The left looked bad, the right looked bad.

To me the middle road looked good.

What a journey on it I've had,

Watching those on roads left and right

Blow lots of hot air forth and back,

Do it constantly day and night,

There is no peace in their attack.

But on the middle road I stay,

Leave lefties and righties alone.

Maybe I will find truth some day.

I'll have to find truth on my own.

For truth, a middle roader, I

Just let the left and right roads lie.

 Old Us

Slowly towards old me comes old dog

With sparkling eyes and wagging tail.

Each morn we have this dialog.

Most often old dog does prevail.

Time for a walk old dog does bark,

As old me tries to pull socks on.

Old dog wants to go to the park.

Old me struggles with clothes to don.

And old me gets ready at last.

Old dog leads old me through the door,

Just as we've walked countless times past,

And hope to walk many times more.

Old dog does love to take old me

On our walk, old agelessly.

 Clothes Call

When Eve picked the forbidden fruit,

Up to that point no clothes she had,

Always was in her birthday suit.

But that did change when she did bad.

God ordered that Eve, now in shame,

Must right away cover herself.

Eve thought the selections were lame,

Bunches of leaves from rack and shelf.

But over time Eve did begin

To find designer clothes to wear.

She loved the shopping life in sin,

And developed a fashion flair.

So when Eve wanted wardrobe new,

She'd pick an apple, maybe two.

 Violence Be

Throughout all time of humankind

Violence has been the prime way

To settle conflicts of the mind.

For help on this to God we pray.

We all believe we each are right

And that God is on our side,

As we battle in test of might,

God taking those of us who died.

Those of us still living fight on.

On violence we humans dwell.

The only fact we know each dawn,

Violence will keep us in hell.

"Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth,"

Violence is a human truth.

 Art for the Taking

I am an art thief now retired,

A long profitable career.

At a young age I was inspired,

Make masterpieces disappear.

I found I had that magic touch,

No matter what security

Had all the museums and such,

I planned the theft, then made it be.

I do know of one case in point,

A famous masterpiece I stole.

Museum's pride got out of joint,

But coverup is now the goal.

Each morning I wake up and see

Mona Lisa smiling at me.

You rolled me up in balls of snow,

Piled on each other and I grew.

You borrowed your Dad's scarf and hat,

Put 'round my neck and on my head.

Where on me arms would have been at,

You stuck in some tree limbs instead.

Day after day you were with me,

And we became the best of  friends.

Such happy times did come to be.

But comes the time cold weather ends.

All snow does melt in nature's way,

But in your heart is where I'll stay.

 The Ghost Gum Trees

Albert Namatjira did love

To paint the ghost gum trees that grow

In Australia, the symbols of

The outback bush and spirit flow

From Aboriginal times old

When these first peoples held these trees

As miracle gifts to unfold

Blessings of healing purities.

His paintings showed these trees to be

Enduring and resilient

In future and in history,

In artful grace, magnificent.

 Perplexing Stuff

A perplexing phenomenon,

Belly button lint - why does it

Show up as I age on and on?

I have lots, others not a bit.

One theory is that tummy hair

On some folks acts like barbed hooks that

Pull clothing fibers that we wear

Into the naval habitat.

And this "lint" does accumulate

Until its host, someone like me,

Does notice and does contemplate

Removing this perplexity.

An ice breaker I did invent,

"Do you have belly button lint?"

 Tongue Curious - LP Zoo

Mom says mine's small cuz I'm still young.

But she says a lion's tongue is

A very important tool for

Doing successful eating biz,

Helping accomplish needed chore

Of scraping off feathers and fur,

And getting right down to the meat.

Tough as thick sandpaper for sure,

My tongue prepares my food to eat.

Meat has always been eaten by

Humankind, so the question be

Not to keep asking why oh why,

But how to do it humanely.

Instead of killing the wild game,

We can breed animals just to

Fulfill human consumption aim.

Such animals have short lives, true,

But it should be requirement that

Such animals have care that will

Keep them well in their habitat,

Until time to humanely kill.

At least agree to not mistreat

Away from him I had to be,

As far away as I could roam.

But I knew he was not the kind

To forever leave me alone.

So that's why I made up my mind

To rid me of him on my own.

A glass of water he asked for,

Instead I filled up a canteen,

Then all over him I did pour

And then lit up the gasoline.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust,

He's on his way to hell I trust.

Oft with ill motive on their mind.

And so when I did fly upon

A young and lovely human maid,

I sensed the old phenomenon,

A catch and cage plan she had laid.

She hoped a flower would lure me

To come close enough so she might

Make a capture, but not to be,

And I flew off into the night.

Seeks to keep beauty in a cage.

Likes to party hearty - no jive.

Here at home in Lincoln Park Zoo,

Stuck it out on a rock so that

Not being a guy who's meekish,

Gobblin' down a bunch of the fish,

Leaving some for others, no doubt.

The rain forests around the Earth

Are victimized by humankind,

Destroying trees for profit worth.

Few humans really seem to mind.

If and when one human would walk

Through a rain forest, one could hear

The trees attempt to sadly talk

Of pleas to reach the human ear

That once the rain forest is gone,

A collapsing of nature will

Slowly but surely descend on

Earth to turn terminally ill.

The rain forest's whimpering cry

Is less and less heard as more die.

 Feathered Single Mom

A fiery throated hummingbird,

All rainbow colors are on me.

And being female I'm assured

I'm as gorgeous as a male be.

I mate with male, then after that

I'm a single mom on my own,

In Costa Rica habitat

In the cloud forest mountain zone.

I build my nest, lay my eggs, hatch,

Make sure my young are well cared for,

Feed them chewed up bugs that I catch,

And they're always hungry for more.

When bugs are hunted as my prey,

I can catch two thousand a day.

The North American Northwest

Is where the creature, Sasquatch, is

Said to be, and I've done my best

To try to mind the Bigfoot biz.

Many a day, many a night

I've camped out in many a place,

Hoping that I will get a sight

Of this ape like one, face to face.

But so far I have come up with

Nothing to show for my long task.

Do I pursue a fact or myth?

It's still the question I must ask.

To be poetically put,

To be or not to be Bigfoot!

 Exchange a Few Words

I walked in the desert one night.

Then suddenly from in the sky

There descended a ball of light.

It was very scary, but I

Just stayed and watched this giant sphere.

Of course I'd heard of U.F.O.'s,

Never thought I'd see one appear.

A  nervousness in me arose.

Maybe abducted I would be.

Seemed like I wouldn't have a choice.

Would pokes and prods be done on me?

But then I heard a booming voice.

"Take me to your leader," it said.

I replied, "I've been told God's dead."

For me it's self this and self that.

My thoughts come in, wisdom goes out,

A self sufficient habitat.

If others don't like what I say,

If others don't like what I do,

It's others in envy display,

Cuz in my mind I'm truly true!

Here at home in Lincoln Park Zoo.

Sometimes I'll roll in mud so that

My body temp will stay more cool,

While in my outside habitat.

Also drink water from my pool.

But if I just want cooling breeze,

I've got two long and tufted ear

That I can flap like fans with ease.

There is some whoosh but I still hear.

So if it's hot when you see me,

My ears most likely flapping be.

 Under Pressure

Queen Liz the First went to Shakespeare,

Said she wanted a love sonnet

For latest flirt she held most dear.

Shakespeare said he'd get right on it.

The Queen said that she would remain

For the few minutes it should take.

Will started feeling pinch of pain

From nervousness o'er pressure sake.

The Queen was known for do her bid

Or consequences could be dire.

Will pondered hard but nothing did

Come quickly to mind to inspire.

And more concerned the Bard did be,

Whether to pee or not to pee.

 Her Afterplay

A sex starved jumping spider guy,

I go in search to find a mate.

A lovely, passive female I

Set eyes on to copulate

With, so do my best courtship dance,

And make my buzzing drum roll sound.

She seems like she'll give me a chance.

So on her bigger bod I bound.

Quite receptive she is for sure.

The two of us do our thing.

When over, I get off of her,

The deed done of procreating.

My mate turns all her eyes on me.

An after sex snack I'm to be.

The thousands of wild mustangs for

Centuries have had full rein to

Increase in herd size more and more,

And live independent lives, true.

At times the U.S. Government

Rounds up some wild mustangs to be

Held, and in safe adoptions sent

To new ownership humanely.

Sometimes the government does use,

To trick mustangs, a Judas horse,

Trained to lead mustangs in a ruse

To capture in a corralled course.

The Rocky Mountains where they roam.

I've often wondered whether God

Does visit worship structures built,

For in God's name to praise and laud,

And fancy over shame and guilt.

The huge cathedrals, wood and stone,

With ornaments of jewels and gold,

Artistic stained glass windows shown,

Material stuff bought and sold.

Preachings be preached and songs be sung

By worshippers in Sunday best.

But I wonder if God's among

These showoffs on God's day of rest.

They were the best of my good life.

I saw the sky all seem more bright,

Much, much bigger than that first spark,

Maybe a real large meteor

Falling fast in a burning arc.

My nervousness got more and more.

I watched the fireball falling down.

There's nothing left of my hometown.

Oh well, I know I am assured

The luscious pears are all for me.

I find a fat pear on a branch,

And eagerly I pick that one.

Tree limb grabs my limb and I blanch.

Breaking free, I begin to run.

I glance back at that mad pear tree.

Branches are coming after me.

 Fall Out of Love

I remember spring time so well.

We each did blossom the same day

And in this garden we did dwell.

Together we made fine display.

I thought we were the perfect pair.

Our petals and leaves would touch,

As summer breezes we did share.

I came to love you oh so much.

But then the time of autumn came,

And away from me you did tilt,

The bond between us not the same.

Our petals and love did wilt.

A perennial you do be,

But only annual is me.

Jamaican Iguana Rebound - LP Zoo

Jamaican iguana, I do

Play the role of ambassador

Here at home in Lincoln Park Zoo,

To help my kind in the wild more.

For a long time my kind were thought

Extinct on the Jamaica isle.

A few of us were found and got

A second chance at wild lifestyle.

I was Zoo hatched in time and place,

And here to make humans aware

Of our conservation case,

Coming back to Jamaica there.

And if successful, mate and me

Will hatch our own family.

Sun of a July Word Bank

It was a scorcher of a day,

Hot as a tortilla on fire.

A windmill did just melt away

Into a tapioca mire,

Causing a landslide to thunder

Through a grove of giant oak trees,

Sending acorns all asunder,

To pyramid in a trapeze,

Dragging an armadillo and

An iguana in rolls and flips

Of reptile scale and mammal band.

And then came a solar eclipse.

And all did settle down after.

Reptile and mammal shared laughter.

 Insatiable Saturn

Saturn, the Roman god of time

Was told he would be overthrown

By offspring, thus did the grave crime

Of eating children of his own.

But one son, Jupiter, was hid

By his mother and grew up to

Fulfill the prophecy, he did,

And father, Saturn, overthrew.

Since Saturn was "sated" with years,

Abusing time o'er his domain,

Jupiter, to allay vast fears,

Put Saturn among stars in chain.

Saturn's children did return, yup,

He was forced to vomit them up.

 Family Portrait - LP Zoo

A family portrait to do,

Cub Pilipili, four months old,

Here at home in Lincoln Park Zoo.

So each one's bizness put on hold,

As Pilipili, Dad and Mom

And the cub's two Aunties do pose

Together on a rock, all calm.

Say "cheese" and all the heads arose.

Pilipili's the only one

Staring at the camera that

Quickly snaps getting the pic done,

A moment in the habitat.

A lovely picture's snapped to be

Of all the pride so pridefully.

 Have Hope

Wherever on Earth humans be

There be the challenges of strife,

Nature testing humanity

As to their worthiness for life.

Sometimes some humans fail the test.

Sometimes some humans do succeed.

Some do their worst, some do their best.

Some empty and some fill their need.

Some humans have more, some have less.

Nature gives all unevening,

Kings and pawns in life's game of chess.

But all humans can have one thing.

Whenever humans have to cope,

That is when humans have to hope.
