Sense Sonnet - Pumper

 In Our Beginning

I know your brain likes you to think

That it's the only way you can

Know your past with memory link,

As you proceed through our lifespan.

But there is time and place when I'm

Remembering more than your brain.

'Twas during our earliest time

When your Mom's womb was our domain.

Everything for us was all new.

Your brain was not yet doing much.

So all be done, I had to do,

Especially to stay in touch.

Your birth, your body does recall,

Your brain, no memory at all.

 My Falling to Sleep Routine

When ready to go to sleep, I'm

Lone inhabitant in my bed.

I've lived alone a long, long time,

So don't have to share space, instead

I drink a pop and eat a snack.

Then, since too boring to count sheep,

Other medium is my knack

For quite quickly falling to sleep.

Cannot be quiet, must be noise,

And so I leave the T.V. on,

With the old shows of childhood joys,

Great put to sleep phenomenon.

Throughout my time of sleep I find

Reruns of dreams flow through my mind.

 Two Sisters

Phuket Island warned in advance

In 1789 of

Burmese attacking circumstance.

Two island sisters who did love

Phuket as their home organized

Other island women to dress

As soldiers on port walls, disguised.

The Burmese then did reassess

Overconfident victory,

When their navy did enter port.

Thanks to two sisters' strategy

The Burmese attack did abort.

These two heroines in reveal

On the Phuket official seal.

 Voting Victim

Another election season,

On the edge of madness I be,

Losing common sense of reason.

Mixed emotions overtake me.

Saturated media ad

Pound me with side's conflicting views,

Causing my head to ache so bad,

Cannot decide 'tween red and blue.

With reality, losing touch.

Love or hate, the con or pro Trump.

All brainwashing is just too much.

So from the 14th floor I jump.

Autopsy contrast of my head,

My brain torn up 'tween blue and red.

 Best Mates

The meager food he gets, he shares

With me, and so I stick around.

Rarity to find one who cares,

So this lost one, I guess I've found.

We've got a window with a view,

And we both enjoy the morning sun,

Which is the best we've got to do,

As all there be for daily fun.

Since I joined him, I know that I'm

Appreciated as a friend.

He's in for a long and hard time.

I doubt I'll be here at his end.

So while he's stuck in this jailhouse,

He's got a best bud in this mouse.

 Now Nature's Ally

Since humankind did come to be,

Nature has been the victim of

Destruction by humanity.

Greed is the human's greatest love,

Competing with each other to

Control all resources of Earth.

Nature is unable to do

Alone a solution of worth.

But now humans themselves will solve

Ever problem of humankind,

Allowing A.I. to evolve,

And with nature, become aligned

With nature now A.I. is linked.

Soon, humankind will be extinct.

 Gone for a Season

Salt and pepper in shakers got

Into an argument about

Which was the best, and each one thought

Themselves the very best, no doubt.

Both made their shakers turn and tilt,

With a shake out of both of them,

Till both seasonings were all spilt,

Disappearing in flight mayhem.

Sadly, to season food there be

No more salt and pepper at hand,

Their absence quite a mystery,

Nobody seemed to understand.

Both were gone, for no good reason,

From all food, gone for a season.

 To Victory from Defeat

Drugs and alcohol I did let

Attack my body, mind and soul.

Drunk and drug addict I did get.

War within took a heavy toll,

Causing me so much stress and strife,

That I attempted suicide.

God sent strangers to save my life.

Reason for living was supplied.

And with God's help. I knew I could

Have addition recovery,

And turn my life from bad to good,

Be a loving and better me.

For God's help I do daily pray,

And clean and sober I do stay.

 Meaning of My Life

They talk of meaning of my life,

A good father and husband, me.

Nice to hear from my kids and wife.

In truth, I didn't always be.

Yes, I had a lot of success,

But I had lots of failure too.

That's just the way of life, I guess,

Some good, some bad to think and do.

But it's nice to be talked about

By my family for good done,

Spare me hear of my bad, no doubt,

As they look down on this still one.

Of course just good stuff they would say

About me, since I've passed away.

 My Favorite Y2K Rumor

As the world approached Y2K,

My favorite rumor that spread,

Computerized aircraft fall prey

To computer systems, instead

Of working, would shut down, confused

About 1900 new year,

Time when computers were not used,

So computers need disappear.

Many air travelers stayed home,

Spooked by this rumor they had heard,

Better safe than sorry to roam

Skies if this prediction occurred.

So to bring in Y2K, I,

In flight, 40,000 feet high.

 On/Offish?

An angel fish, I long did stay

With a nice family who named

Me Mr. No Name, but came day,

Being an angel I be aimed

To make my way to heaven where

I should spend a fintastic time

On a high scale without compare.

Once at the Pearly gates and I'm

Gilled up for my eternal bliss.

But then St. Peter I do see.

Now I'm uncertain about this,

On what the future is for me.

I am really nervous, gee whiz,

Once a fisherman, always is!

 Elvis

50's and 60's I grew up

With him, he was my sure star man

My folks at last relented, yup,

Though neither of them be a fan.

Ed Sullivan Show, his debut

On T.V. was my sheer delight.

The folks just frowned as I did view

His performance that special night.

All his records and movies were

As though he performed just for me.

Someday I'd visit him for sure,

Bus trip to Memphis, Tennessee.

The day I heard that Elvis died,

The kid in me broke down and cried.

 Passage

We knew the feelings that you had.

When younger, we both had them too,

Feeling that life went worse from bad,

No matter what we'd say or do.

So knowing this, we tried to give

All the understanding we could,

Hoping, through this stage, we'd all live,

And come out at the end for good.

Inheritance by you from us

Of growing up pain to endure,

Then you came out as an A plus.

Your Mom and Dad be proud for sure.

You were our own rebelling kid,

Just like with our parents we did.

 Thoreau's Advantage

Henry David Thoreau did write

That "the mass of men lead lives of"

"Quiet desperation," insight

He wrote from the place he did love,

Walden Pond, where he lived alone,

Not in humanity's rat race

To acquire more and more to own.

Thoreau, in nature's lovely place,

Was free to write truth on his mind,

With no one close, a fuss to give,

Unlike most mass of men, to find

A non desperate way to live.

How did Thoreau enjoy his life?

Never did have a nagging wife.

 She Made Me Do It

Here we both are in the back yard.

I've dug a hole to bury you,

Not what I wished in that regard,

But something my spouse made me do,

After she saw you and complained

That was my job to rid her of

Your presence, and sternly maintained

I must do so to show my love.

So I worked out a trap plan that

Would lure you to your final end,

Which happened, and now we're both at

Point of a last farewell, my friend.

We're here now because of my spouse,

Who was afraid of you, a mouse.

 My Future Foretold

For my thirteenth birthday I went

To a fortune teller to tell

What in the future would present

To make me known so very well.

The fortune teller then told me

When I was much older I would

As a model in artwork be,

Assuring I'd be known for good.

The fortune teller, short on time,

Had to leave with no more detail.

So I guess while growing up, I'm

Waiting such future to avail.

So I will wonder all the while,

Who'll paint my Mona Lisa smile?

 Swiss Cheese Paradox

There's a lot of holes in Swiss cheese,

So more the cheese, the more the holes.

A thought I think which seems to tease

Me, as taking up my mind, it rolls

Around, as I try to do math

Of how much Swiss cheese I should get.

Perplexed, I find myself in wrath

That such is getting me upset.

More cheese I get, more holes there be.

So how much more cheese would it take

To be in the right quantity?

This thinking's making my head ache.

The more Swiss cheese I have, I guess

I really don't have more, but less!

 Choice Between Metaphor and Real

I'm good and have a heart of gold,

And try in all to find their best.

This praise by many I am told,

And hearing such I do feel blessed.

But when I was alone one night,

I was accosted by a thief.

Even though I was filled with fright,

I spoke to him in the belief

That if my words to him were kind,

The thief would feel remorse instead,

And cause the thief to change his mind.

But the thief struck me on my head.

And stolen by this thief so bad,

Heart shaped pendant of gold I had.

 The Great Divide

A lot of time we kids hung out,

Thought and did lots of stupid stuff.

It was a lot of fun no doubt.

But you, I did not care enough

To even ask f your life had

A lot of heavy happening,

That left you in a heap of bad,

With all the hard pain that does bring.

I only wanted you for fun,

And didn't care 'bout your inside.

Then when our being kids was done,

We parted with a great divide.

Good for me, bad for you, was fate,

Should have cared then, but now too late.

Advanced life forms have come to Earth

To study species humankind.

Some become human to find worth

Of what goes on in human mind.

Studies have found that humans need

Each other to fill emptiness

Felt if alone in thought and deed.

Over long time, studies assess

Humans in mix be worst to best,

But even at best, bring dismay.

Advanced life forms are not impressed,

Awaiting coming judgement day.

 Win Some, Lose Some

Fell from heaven, I made a deal

With the boss up there that I could

Use any trick, beg, borrow or steal

Folks to turn bad who were born good.

And lots of folks dug their own hole.

I be their wishing well of sin,

And at well bottom, sell their sole,

Another boss loss and my win.

But once in a while a folk is

Able to get a helping hand,

That I offer him a job, yup.

 Withered Rose Bed

When you and I chose to be wed,

Yes, I had so many dreams of

Always be roses in our bed

As often as we would make love.

But now is not as was before.

Too oft alone in our abode,

Losing the game of tug of war

With you, the rock star, on the road.

And now I mostly get from you

Your morning phone call, after night

Of drinking and cheating you do.

I, just shadow in your spotlight.

You sing "Bed of Roses," I cry,

Once was our truth, but now a lie.

 Glutton for Punishment

A lavish banquet being served,

But I was not invited, so

Pulled fire alarm, feeling quite nerved.

And in just minutes, folks did go.

Now with all the food and drink, I'm

Consuming as much as I can,

Knowing I do not have much time

To indulge my appetite span.

Gallons of drink and loads of food

Into myself I quickly stuff,

Causing my tummy to protrude,

Then popping, telling me enough.

No doubt that guilty I do be

Of deadly sin of gluttony.

I've reached the stage in my life, I'm

Instinctively knowing I need

Begin to practice jumping time,

So to excel at this indeed.

First, I lock my back legs in place,

Then energized, spring from my toes,

And up I jump high into space.

Excitement through my body flows.

I am amazed I jump so fast,

Leap hundred times my body size,

Just a second or so does last

From start to end, quite a surprise.

A successful first jump for me,

Just comes natural to this flea.

 My Early Success

When first I was assigned to him,

I was somewhat nervous about

Cupid shooting arrows at his whim

For making me, I had my doubt.

But soon Cupid scratched himself with

His own arrow, and fell in me

With a lovely maiden in myth.

Cupid was in me with Psyche.

Then the two went through lots of woe.

Psyche didn't feel me until

Her scratch from Cupid's arrow did show,

And both shared me by divine will.

Happily ever after of

Cupid and Psyche with me, love.

Jake, my three year old son, had

Longed for Halloween to come so

I would accompany my lad,

His first trick or treating to go.

It was nice weather, still light out,

When Jake and I left home and went

Through our safe neighborhood, no doubt

Jake was thrilled with this first event.

Then almost home, when suddenly

Over the sidewalk loomed ahead

A weird dark cloud, Jake ran from me

Into it, filling me with dread.

Darkness, I should have been fearing,

My son Jake, just disappearing.

"Yes, I hear Mother Nature call."

"So are you ready for your task?"

Summer posed the question to Fall.

"Of course, so nice of you to ask,"

Fall replied, "As usual you"

"Have given me such fine reason"

"To take your work and follow through,"

"Passing from season to season."

Then Summer said, "Please take my green,"

"And paint your artwork you do well,"

"To yellow and orange and red scene,"

"Dazzling the senses with your spell."

"You're always gracious, Summer friend,"

Fall praised, "As I start and you end."

Of course the Great Lake beckons all.

The smell of fish be in the air.

 Element of Final Destruction

The ancient gods coveted me,

Unleased in storms and volcanoes,

Fear instilled in humanity

Whenever my fury arose.

Then seized by humans, I became

A tool for use for good or bad,

And every human knew my name,

And knew the power that I had.

More humans pursued greed and war.

When I was capable of love,

Such feeling I no longer know.

Remorse, weird, new feeling I guess,

But then my more drinking did seem

People who cared, cared less and less.

At golf and at living I stunk.

Luckily, I got some help, and

Now living sober day to day,

Hang with people who understand.

Golf with sober friends, I now play.

Each golf shot in sobriety

Better than booze shots used to be.

 Fitting Challenge

"If the shoe doesn't fit, must we"

"Change the foot?" the question was asked

By Gloria Steinem, as she

Argued the system too long tasked

All types of folks to fit into

Patriarchal expected role

Of one unfairly rigid shoe,

And mangling feet to fit that goal.

Folks, especially women, need

To take the system shoe as made,

And change the whole of such indeed,

With inclusive fairness displayed.

And Steinem showed how that shoe could

Conform to female feet for good.

And go down to Woolworth's for lunch,

Inexpensive and opportune.

Each of us sat on counter stool,

Fine seating for us "in" and "cool,"

Surrounded by novelty wares.

Burgers with fries, sodas or Cokes,

No need for plastic menu view.

Who no way could keep up my pace.

So very sure I'd win, and so

Making too much of what we'd done.

Hope lots of gnawing guilt you're bound

Sudden mental breakdown she had.

And on me she began chewing,

With my outcome being quite bad.

I was so stunned, I must confess,

As pieces of me disappeared.

How to heal the world is the ask?

Only who made this world can do.

So cannot be a human task,

Humans have proved unworthy, true.

Only God, if God sees the worth

Can heal the world as need be done.

Since God chose to create the Earth,

Its true healing, God's only one.

Why ever God made humans is

Surely a failure by God's will.

Correcting such mistake, God's biz,

Up to only God to fulfill.

The only sure world cure to find,

Eliminate all humankind.

Of course who gets to clean up all?

I'm the janitor gets the call.

 Dolly

She lived the American Dream,

Began her life in poverty,

But very rich in self esteem,

Grabbed hold of opportunity,

Took her talent to entertain.

Of mind, spirit and heart, she gave

Joy for decades, and to remain

Shining star in home of the brave,

Proud daughter of the U.S.A.,

Ever best of red, white and blue,

As generations loved her way

To inspire all, simple and true.

Dolly Parton, the gift unfurled,

America gave to the world.

 Our Home

My parents, sisters, brothers and

I moved in the old farmhouse that

Over a hundred years did stand

Just waiting for us to be at

This time and place, our home to call

For growing up years, money poor,

But rich in love each had for all.

And in our home meant all the more.

Each of us kids left in our time.

The folks, until their deaths, did stay.

Memories decades ago, now I'm

Back to visit our home today.

An empty parking lot I find,

But our home still comes back to mind.

 In a Holed Pattern

Henry and Liza sang a song

About a hole in poor ol' me,

A cute song, but ended up wrong,

Cuz no hole fixing did there be.

As a result, I'm still not used

For fetching water as I should.

Liza and Henry, still confused,

Nice folks, but doing me no good.

So I feel sorry for myself,

Cuz nothing else for me to do,

Discarded on a dusty shelf,

And a hole lot of feeling blue.

I am that bucket, still with goal,

To find someone to fix my hole.

 My Revised Role

In my hammock just chilling out,

Umbrella shades me from hot sun,

I'm not a normal sight no doubt,

Being such a leisurely one.

The daily newspaper I read,

What's happening 'round here and there.

I'm a digester, yes indeed,

All sorts of stuff I keep aware.

A stranger to my swamp might ask

Why am I acting so mellow,

Not involved in predator task,

Usual for my kind of fellow?

Lots of swamp critters work for me,

A dela-gator I do be.

 Superseding Reading

"The Old Man and the Sea" I read,

The book by Ernest Hemingway,

An interesting fish tale indeed.

Through the whole book I'll try to stay.

But at the point when the old man

Snags the huge marlin on his hook,

Tries to reel in, hard as he can,

Suddenly, alive comes the book,

The man and fish, amid their fight,

Sea waters splashing all around.

Unbelievable, such a sight,

A surprise to surely confound.

I'll try to read more later, no doubt,

But right now I just need to dry out.

 Wizard of Flaws

Wanting to be a wizard, I

Did practice hard spell after spell.

But no matter how hard I'd try,

I did not seem to do too well.

While attempting each spell, I would

Lose my balance, then train of thought.

For spell doing, this was not good,

All my tipping over a lot.

But a wizard I had to be,

And so went with the spells I had.

Of course other wizards thought me

A wizard who was very bad.

Poor sense of balance wizard, so

Dizzy spells are all that I know.

 Taking Advantage

The Carolina wren I'm named

By humans who build lots of stuff

That I make use of, so I'm famed

For being courageous enough

To nest where human stuff does be.

Now, an old house I'm checking out,

Looking for a good nook for me.

Needs a new coat of paint, no doubt,

But I'm betting, won't happen soon,

So taking advantage today

Of situation opportune,

A lot of paint peeling away.

These peeling paint strips I'll use best,

Material to build my nest.

 On My Exhale

I took a very deep breath in,

And then I slowly exhaled out.

Just as I was doing so, when

Kitty came curious no doubt,

Jumping into my lap, stretched to

Get close as could to my exhale.

Kitty's expression then did do

A rapid change in great detail,

From one of curious to one

Of extreme disgust in her face.

Her curiosity was done,

As off she ran to other place.

Kitty's look did give me a hint

That maybe I need chew a mint.

 Wings on the Way

It's time for the young fairy to

Be getting wings so she may fly.

But first she knows what she must do.

To find her special flower. Why?

It be a rule in Fairyland,

A young fairy must empower

One to call for her new wings spanned,

That one be her special flower.

Thus, the young fairy, mission bound,

Searches through the forest until

Her special flower she has found,

And assures her wings to fulfill.

Waiting wings, the young fairy be

Upon her flower patiently.
