 Shopping For

Three triplets on a shopping trip,

Lovely young ladies laughing while

Rushing as lots of raindrops drip,

Giving them all a wet look style.

Bags a many under each arm,

Home for Christmas the students are.

For December, it is quite warm.

The trio headed for the car

From their favorite stores where they

Bought gifts for the nice girls each be,

To open up on Christmas day,

Full of merriment cheer and glee.

Christmas presents from Dad who will

Not have to shop but pay the bill.

 2025 Resolution

2025, new year, I

Resolved to stop eating snacks that

Had lots of calories supply

That supplied me with much more fat.

As days turned into months, gee whiz,

Keeping down calorie intake

Became part of of my normal biz,

And losing pounds for goodness sake.

As 2025 end drew

Nearer and holidays began,

Snack cheating here and there I'd do,

Of course increasing my girth span.

Holiday snacks, it does appear,

I've same resolution next year.

 "Tick"

Random word generator pick

As prompt for a poem to write,

Randomly generated, "tick,"

A common English word that might

Be used as a noun, a short, sharp sound

Regularly made by a clock,

Or as a verb, word's turned around

To be making such sound, "tick" talk.

In biology, a "tick" be

A blood sucking bug that oft is

Discovered making meal of me

After a nature walk, gee whiz!

Many a "tick" my clock's "ticked" by,

As a "tick" took my blood supply.

 Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the car,

Named by Caractacus Potts for

My engine sounds, though quite bizarre,

I'm magical and trip galore,

Caring for the Potts' family,

Transporting them in time and place,

Impossible, except for me,

I'm an extraordinary case.

Jemima and Jeremy Potts

And their Papa Potts often get

Into all kinds of messes, lots,

I'm there to save them, no regret.

All of the Potts' love it when I

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and fly.

 Added Elf on the Shelf

Sitting all alone on a shelf

Where I was sent by Santa to

Sit for Christmas all by myself.

I'm a very lonesome elf, true,

With nobody else to talk with.

In this house watching children, I

Have been assigned, a fact not myth,

By Santa, and the purpose why,

Whether the children be nice or

Naughty to put on Santa's list,

Necessary but lonely chore.

I called Santa for an assist.

So now a happy elf I be.

My buddy elf, Santa sent me.

 Amidst Ruins

On the ruins' rocky wall shelf

Written there a reminder be

That each time I talk to myself,

I should also be hearing me.

"What does this mean?" I asked out loud,

And my question, myself I heard.

Then surprisingly, from the crowd

Of ruins, the answer occurred,

"Wisdom is listening to all,"

"Find carefully the truth therefrom,"

The voice came from the ruins' wall.

I wondered how such voice could come.

Then from the ruins' wall I knew.

Words were written, "I talk to you."

 Came to the Game

I'm in Chicago for the game.

The Bears are my favorite team

For football it's the greatest name.

Since very young it's been my dream

To make the long trip and to see

A real live game at Soldier Field.

Now in the parking lot is me.

Lots of high spirits are revealed,

Tailgate partying with the crowd,

Many in bear costumes dressed up.

I'm complimented and so proud

To be toasted a loyal fan, yup!

None of the humans seem to care,

The fact that I am a real bear.

 My Wife's Food Craving

I went to court with the wife for

A shoplifting charge that she faced.

A can of peaches from a store

She stole cuz of a craving taste

For, she told the judge who then found

Her guilty and sentenced her span

Of three days in jail to be bound,

Since three peaches were in the can

That she stole, she started to yell.

I knew somehow she would blame me

When she came home, life would be hell.

A witness, the judge let me be,

"Your Honor, may I mention please,"

"The wife stole too a can of peas."

 My Sympathy for the Devil

I am a preacher man who's life

Is devoted to the Lord in

All I do, but sadly my wife

Was unfaithful and filled with sin.

She spent all of my money and

Embarrassed me in public so

I prayed to try to understand

How this burden could be let go.

One night she came back home quite late,

I got so mad I strangled her.

Life in prison is now my fate.

Heaven should forgive me for sure.

Now my wife down in hell must be.

The devil has my sympathy.

 Lesson on Semicolon Use

I started writing poetry.

Often my best critic sat near,

Sonnet, the house cat, watching me.

Early, taught me a lesson dear.

I used semicolons a lot,

Not knowing if used wrong or right,

But looked brainy, or so I thought.

Then Sonnet growled upon their sight,

Letting me know they should be gone.

Sonnet just did not understand.

Semicolons stayed, whereupon

I still have a scar on my hand.

The pause at the end of the clause

Brought claws from the end of the paws.

 Bang as Sang

You'd catch a grenade just for me,

You kept singing your same old song,

And sang what a bad girl I be,

How I treated you oh so wrong.

You sang you gave me all you had,

And in the trash I tossed that all.

Why oh why did I treat you bad?

Sure not like your good windup doll.

So, yeah, I dumped you, but still you

Would not shut up singing your woe.

So what the heck, and why not do

What you boasted, and watch you blow!

So took you up on boast you made,

I tossed and you caught a grenade.

Sense Sonnet - Chiller

 Sleepclimbing

And now I lay me down to sleep,

And pray that if tonight I die,

That from above angels shall sweep,

And carry me to heaven high.

And as I slept, I dreamt they came,

The angels taking me away,

Upward, and so must be their aim,

Bound for heaven, as I did pray.

Oh so happy I be with this,

The for sure evidence that I'm

In route to my eternal bliss,

Going on my heavenly climb.

In sleep I climb beyond my reach,

Awake upon the roof, and screech.

 Last Time They Chose

Isidor and Ida Straus wed

Forty one years when tragedy,

The Titanic sinking, instead

Of boarding lifeboats, he and she

Chose that two others take their place,

And on deck, together they stayed

Till two twenty a.m. to face

Their drowning death, the choice they made.

Ida's body never was found.

Isidor's was recovered and

His pocket watch showed time be bound,

Two twenty a.m. as fate planned.

The gold pocket watch, a gift to

 Picked to Pose

It is Feast of Sinterklaas time,

And outside, the season's first snow.

"Hey, let's dress up Snorlax," so I'm

Donned with the festive hat and go

Outside with knicks and knacks to sit

In the white stuff for a snap shot,

To set the holiday mood fit

For inside partying a lot.

For a Dutch celebration be

I guess the best my human boy

Could come up with, and so picked me.

So while under this funny cap,

Gives me great time to take a nap.

 Sun Done

Now in a yellow dwarf stage is

The sun, so scientists do say.

Converts to energy its biz,

So losing mass every day.

And eventually the sun

Will be in a red giant stage,

Very thin and miserly one,

Five billion years older in age.

When such happens, for what it's worth,

I'd need artificial sun tan.

No more sun rays will hit the earth.

The sun will pop in that time span.

When the sun's thin and miserly,

I won't be here to bother me.

 Future Fate?

I was young and I fell in love

With her, we dated for a while.

I told her my deep feelings of

Wanting to wed, but she'd just smile

And say that she was not the one

For me, and I'd be better off

With someone else in the long run.

The more I'd beg the more she'd scoff.

Soon after she just disappeared.

Years later on the nightly news,

Strangely familiar face, so weird,

And then it dawned on me of who's.

She once was the love of my life,

Now accused husband killer wife.

 The Harp

Cana and Machuel Cludhmor had

A marital spat and Cana fled

To the seashore, feeling so sad,

Hearing lovely music instead,

She fell into a deep sleep, and

When Machuel found her, he too

Heard music and did understand

It came from the wind blowing through

A whale skeleton on the beach.

His wife awoke, and he begged her

For forgiveness, and did beseech

Her help, sweet music to endure.

Back to their home the two then went.

Later, the harp they would invent.

 Comedy of My Tragedy

I was living a tragedy,

So decided to write about

Me in autobiography,

Should be a best seller no doubt.

So wrote about my tragic life,

I lived so much that need be said,

Hundreds of pages of my strife.

Two people bought my book and read,

Each sending me a note to say

That writing of my tragic stuff

Need written such a funny way,

That I wasn't tragic enough.

Now a comedy writer, I'm

Writing tragedies all the time.

 Why Me?

Mommy said I was old enough

And be a big girl and go to

School, but she said a lot of stuff

Like going to the doctor. Boo!

Mommy said she would go with me

For my first day at school, and show

Me how much fun that school could be.

She didn't care that I said, "No!"

Mommy took me in the class room.

Some strange, old lady came and said

She was my teacher, Mrs. Doom,

Whatever her name was instead.

I need to find a Mommy who'll

Learn me my lessons at home school!

 Unhappy Ending

I was with her a long, long time,

Many wonderful talks we had.

But then one night she said that I'm

Too old fashioned, that made me sad.

The two of us no longer flew

Together as we'd often done.

First class on planes, alone, she'd do,

Saying such trips were much more fun.

And then that oh so sad day came,

She had made up her mind no doubt.

With broken heart, I could not blame

Her, my friend, for throwing me out.

Mary Poppins discarded me,

A blue umbrella I now be.

 Cliche Avoidance

Two astronauts, we went to space.

I fell head over heels for her.

Indeed I was a lovesick case.

But how she felt, I wasn't sure.

Head over heels, yes a cliche,

So I avoided saying that.

Then I left the capsule one day.

She watched where outside I was at,

As I was making repairs, so

While floating, a somersault I

Did for her as a way to show

How I felt, and I told her why,

"Right now, not head over heels, instead,"

"Honey, for you I'm heels over head!"

 Ignorance is Bliss

Went to Doc for routine checkup.

Doc took some tests and told me to

Call him the next day, which came, yup,

And I called Doc for the review.

Doc, always a straight shooter, said,

"Your tests show news bad and news worse."

"Twenty four hours, you'll be dead."

Yes, bad news, I wanted to curse,

But asked Doc what the worse news be.

Doc seemed unsure of what to say,

But finally, Doc said to me,

"I should have told you yesterday."

Thought of that cliche hearing this.

Yesterday ignorance was bliss.

 Driftwood

He was just a piece of dead wood

When I first met him, and so I

Carved him into best as I could,

Brought him to life just like that guy,

Pinocchio, but after while

He drifted away, and I learned

He be a cheat of lie and guile.

So poured some gas on him and burned

Him till he was just a charred piece

Of rotten stuff once from a tree,

Which I decided to release

As pollution into the sea.

Now just a floating burnt chunk of

Driftwood, unworthy of my love.

 Bless Your Heart

My youth and beauty I did use

To use others for my delight,

Of which you were one to amuse

Me for a good time through the night.

Your heart so soulful and steadfast

In passion inflamed just for me.

I, undeserving as time passed,

Just led you on continually.

My ugliness inside began

To spread to my outside as years

Went by, but through all of that span

Your love for me ever appears.

On your deathbed I come to you,

And thank you for your love so true.

But finally truth did convince

That we need become history.

So I decided you and I

Had to go our separate ways,

Difficult, but we had to try.

Each of us deserved better days.

Can make your life better for you.

In January wintertime,

I bundle up and take a walk

To Great Lake Michigan where I'm

Fully sensing  the season of

The now of dark and wind and snow,

In place and time a walk I love.

Seeing the shoreline ice caps glow.

Hearing the lake waves hit the ice.

Tasting the snowflakes flurry by.

Smelling fresh, crisp air to entice.

Touched by  the stinging chill supply.

Just a brief walk to avoid harm,

Then back to home where it is warm.

 Highlanders

Highland cattle have long held court,

Embodiment of the wild heart

Of Scotland as a rugged sort,

Beautiful beast as much a part

Of rolling hills and heather where

These shaggy furred bovines have grazed

In time and place for eons there.

Of folklore and fact they've amazed

All who are fortunate enough

To connect with them, past and now,

And sense that beneath all their rough

Is a bond with humans somehow.

Known by the Scots, and treasured be.

Under the mistletoe she stood,

She told him she'd been very good,

And hoped on that list was her name.

All she wanted for Christmas gift

Was Santa to give her a kiss.

For that would be enough to lift

The spirit of this hopeful miss,

Something Santa could understand.

He put down his bag and instead

Did approach the five year old and

Kissed her gently on her forehead.

Mrs. Claus did smile, as it were,

When Santa got home and told her.

Your invitation to me to

Enter your treasury sounds nice,

But I wonder if such I do,

Will I pay too high of a price?

For you will a river I cry

Seems not to be the healthy kind,

But rather more like carnal sin

With burial comes second death,

When my body no one can see.

Is when all memories there were

As though my life did not occur.

 Facelift

Depending on the day of week,

I assign a look for my face.

Mad, scared, puzzled, happy, I seek.

Bored, amused or sad I do place

To wear each particular day.

When not in use, other masks be

Hung upon a wall for display,

Until each is needed by me.

I collect each face mask with skill,

And wear it until it wears out.

For each replacement, I do kill

Someone with such a face, no doubt.

I see a happy face on you,

And so your facelift I will do.

 Grateful for Now

I only know what I know now.

I do not know what is ahead.

I do not know the when and how

I leave my life and join the dead.

This life began, this life will end.

Each day I try to live life well,

And I am helped by my best friend,

Always with me and I can tell

Jesus whatever's on my mind,

And on my heart and on my soul,

Knowing Jesus is true and kind,

And helps me keep good as my goal.

I know when on my deathbed be,

Jesus, my friend will be with me.

 Her Enigmatic Smile

Very often I told her of

Feeling Cupid's arrow striking me,

And causing me to fall in love

With her, and hearing this then she

Would smile at me in such a way

As to be puzzling for sure

As to what she meant to portray

In feeling truly felt by her.

Then one day we walked in the wood,

She said the two of us must part.

With bow and arrow, her shot was good,

Just like Cupid, into my heart.

Even dying, what did beguile

Me was her enigmatic smile.

 Ongoing Viral

There are a few of humankind

Who wish to dominate the world,

And be of such an evil mind,

Creating virus to be hurled

Upon rest of humanity,

First making sure these evil few

Are immunized so as to be

Safe from vast death each virus do.

These evil few of course aware

Varied virus will be required,

Each time killing a greater share

Of humans to reach goal desired.

Wave after wave of virus more

Killing more humans than before.

 In Line

Waiting in line is a time sure

I dislike, especially so

When by myself and must endure

All strangers by me I don't know.

Of course the slowest cashier be

In whatever line I do choose.

All customers in front of me

Find any reason to abuse

My patience, as all other lines

I watch do promptly move along,

But on me my line has designs

To make my stay so meanly wrong.

Waiting in line, ill fate has sewn

Me into hell and all alone.

 What If Romeo...?

Thinking that Juliet was dead,

Romeo started back to her,

But took a fall and hit his head,

Causing him amnesia for sure.

He ended up in Tuscany,

Wearing a funny yellow wig,

Looking like cornmeal mush so he

Is teased a lot, but starts a gig

As a woodcarver, skilled but poor.

Perhaps as puppeteer he could

Be happier with money more.

He finds the perfect piece of wood.

Past Romeo, now Geppetto,

Carves wood into Pinocchio.

 Thanks to Our Cult

A California cult we be

To save the state from the "big one."

That is our cult mentality,

And so far success has been done.

Along the San Andreas zone

All earthly possessions we throw,

Everything valuable we own,

Deep down into the earth cracks go.

And for so long as we do this,

Major earthquakes on this fault line

Have not occurred, a state of bliss,

Thanks to sacrifice to divine.

San Andreas god we exalt,

And are generous to a fault.

 Tradition at My Peril

Thanksgiving traditional meal

Has long included turkey, so

This year to make it seem more real

Off for a wild bird I did go,

Like those first Pilgrims must have done.

And so I trekked into the wood,

Aimed at a turkey with my gun,

Shot, but missed, and before I could

Fire again, that bird flew at me.

Shocked, I dropped the gun on the ground,

Which then caused its firing to be,

And hitting my leg with the round.

What's on the tray rattles my nerves,

Turkey meal the hospital serves.

 They Found Me

"Rafflesis hasseltii," I hear

An excited human voice yell,

Then see a group of them come near

My rainforest vined home, oh well,

They seem  a harmless human sort,

Long searching for one of my kind.

What the heck! I'll be a good sport

As they take pictures, I don't mind.

They happened to catch me in bloom,

Which about once a year I do.

Their shedding of tears I assume

Is that I am their dream come true.

Rotting meat smell, part of my fame,

So Corpse Flower is my nickname.

 Unneighborly

With a purple cap and green shades,

I noticed him when he moved in

The abandoned shack in my glades.

I took a liking to his skin.

So I waited till he came out

And got into his small rowboat.

In the water I came about,

Grabbed him sitting above, afloat.

A good neighbor I know I'm not,

And now this poor guy knows it too,

As he gave all his skin, a lot,

Very tasty, just as I knew.

This gator made a meal of him,

Took boat and cap and shades on whim.

 Momma Wolf Spider

Momma wolf spider knows the drill,

Raising her young she's on her own.

After mating, she made with skill

The egg sac with her eggs now sown

With the seed of the now gone mate.

The egg sac made silken and round

On her tummy, Momma does want

For her young'uns to be hatched bound.

Even after hatching, young stay

On her tummy a week or two,

Cheering on as Momma hunts prey.

Lots of good care Momma does do.

And after while when the young'uns go,

Momma's off looking for a new beau.

 The Lady

The Lady's been for a long time,

And now she's hundreds of years old,

Always anxious to help those climb

To heaven if they pay her gold.

She is not so blatant with this

As in the Middle Ages be,

But selling her heavenly bliss

Is still the favorite way that she

Assures her fans that more they give

Her the more likely they will go

Up her stairs to heaven to live.

After all, who is gonna know!

Stairway trip the Lady does sell,

Stepping to heaven or to hell?

 Orpheus and Eurydice

Orpheus went to Hades to

Try bring Eurydice back with

Him, reuniting their love true,

But required, according to myth,

He had to walk in front of her,

Not looking back until both had

Arrived in the upper world sure.

Alas, their love tale ended sad.

He got to the upper world and

Thought they both were now safe and sound.

A look back and he'd understand

She was going to stay hell bound.

Some versions of the myth report

The two were pawns in the gods' sport.

 Chirp Peril

The chirping of crickets at night

In summer time is less and less.

Partly due to climate change plight

Killing crickets is the best guess.

But also  there's a theory that

Male crickets who do chirping most

To let females know where they're at

Have learned through time that such a boast

Also lets predators know where

They are at, so smart crickets let

Dumber ones chirp, and targets there

For incoming predator threat.

The smarter silent males then usurp

Females responding to dumb male's chirp.

 Teenage Love and Tragedy

We met during a high school play,

My Romeo, his Juliet.

Afterwards, a couple we'd stay.

So possessive, he'd get upset,

Not enough my attention be

Given him, making him so sad.

He expected much more from me.

I broke up, he made me so mad.

One day he called and begged me to

Meet him, I said yes, but instead

Went shopping, he and I were through.

They found him in the garage, dead.

Long I wondered if he thought I'm

Coming, so would find him in time.

 Dispelled

The witch and I went through the wood.

I showed her which toadstools to choose,

To brew in her cauldron as good

Potion for beauty she could use,

Wanting to rid her ugliness.

She promised freedom in return

For me if the brew was success.

Oh, such an outcome I did yearn,

But knew her promise was a lie.

So toadstools that I pointed out

Were of grave poisonous supply,

Able to kill a witch no doubt.

When asked if pretty as before,

This raven did quoth, "Nevermore."

 Disencampment

Our men told us we had to leave.

The enemy was marching to

Our camp and too soon we would grieve

For death the enemy would do.

So with our children and the old,

We climb into the mountains high

Where we will face hunger and cold,

And know that below our men die.

The enemy keeps coming on,

And forcing us to flee our home.

So many of us now are gone.

Few of us left, in despair roam.

We listen to our children cry,

We have no reason for them why.

 Marimba

I am called a marimba and

In 1940 just for me

My first solo concert was planned,

And in Carnegie Hall did be.

This gave me standing of my own

As a musical instrument,

Not just another xylophone.

It was a time and place that meant

That I, marimba, had achieved

Highest resonating acclaim

For percussion to be received,

Reaching my greatest range of fame.

So, Moms and Dads, please give some thought

To let me be played by your tot.

 My Eyespots

Being a fine and fit peacock

I know it's time for me to do

My duty with the peahen stock

To go a courting with those who

Eye me close to evaluate

My feather eyespots to decide

If I be a suitable mate.

I show off my eyespots with pride,

Knowing that in shape and hue they

Have the drawing power for sure,

That when I flair them in display,

I will attract the perfect her.

My eyespots open up for me

Best mating opportunity.

 Doubters Beware

A man died from a rooftop fall.

Beijing authorities involved,

Ruling of accident their call,

Finding the man was drunk, case solved.

Doubts about this case spread online.

These doubters should have known that they

Would face punishment by design.

Chinese authorities don't play.

Doubters' accounts were scrutinized,

Many were closed, all doubters knew

Each and all of them jeopardized

Safety  in what they say and do.

Each and all doubters be aware

Prone to "accidents" they now share.

My Game Up to My Name

Momma had breakfast ready when

I finally got out of bed.

And from Momma I heard again,

"There's chores that need be done," she said.

And of course I would put them off,

Giving Momma excuses why.

Momma would glare at me and scoff.

Then I'd look sad, Momma would sigh,

Give up bugging me anymore,

Knowing I was good at this game,

We'd played so many times before.

That's why Momma gave me my name.

Putting off excuses from me,

Cuz Procrastination I be.

 Ladder of Modern Day

The modern day ladder I see

Has a much wider space between

Each of its rungs, than used to be

On ladders in olden day scene.

I thought about this for a while,

As to possibilities why.

Lots of theories I did compile,

Then decided the best one I

Came up with is that folks today

Are much taller than folks once were,

So space 'tween rungs need wider way

For better stepping to occur.

Today's ladder rearrange

Most likely due to climb it change.

 Well Seasoned

Since I did spring forth in my life

I have been blessed with loved ones who

Be comfort through both joy and strife.

I am so grateful that I knew

Them all and have good memories,

As in my life each came and went,

Like seasons change leaves on the trees.

Seasons with loved ones, time well spent.

Now in the winter of life, I

With many loved ones still blessed be,

And time spent  with each, I sure try

To share the very best of me.

I hope when I am dead and gone,

In good memories, I'll live on.

 His Doll

He found me when he was a boy,

And kept me though I was a doll.

I became more than just a toy.

With me he shared his secrets all.

I was small and of cloth was made,

So he could carry me around.

Inside his uniform I laid,

And was with him history bound,

As we went into World War II.

He really thought he'd win that war.

But just the opposite came true.

He shouted at me more and more.

He placed me on a bunker shelf,

Then Adolf Hitler shot himself.

 In the Meadow

In a mountain meadow we met

In springtime with the grass so green.

The two of us choosing to let

Nature take its course 'twixt and 'tween,

As we laid in the soft, sweet grass,

Feeling a gentle breeze blow by,

Watching the puffy white clouds pass

In a sunny bright lit blue sky,

And all around the mountains be

Magnificent in towered grace,

Giving sense of comfort as we

Enjoyed ourselves in time and place.

Meeting in the mountain meadow,

Romance 'twixt and 'tween buck and doe.

 Red Umbrella

Today's a dark and gloomy day

With steady rainfall from the sky,

Lots of umbrellas, black and gray,

But being contrarian, I

Do carry you above my head,

So all the falling raindrops know,

Come splash my umbrella, bright red,

As we two wait for the rainbow,

That will appear colored divine,

And all the storm clouds give way to

The coming brightness of sunshine,

And then of course I'll say thank you.

To my bright red umbrella indeed,

So "red"ily serving my need.

 Pen or Sword

The sword was livid when it heard

The pen was mightier than it.

The sword loud thundered, "How absurd!"

"The pen is but a little twit,"

Then confronted the pen and gave

The pen a great swipe of its blade,

Missing, and then did rant and rave,

While a calmness the pen displayed.

In time humankind made the choice

Of selecting the pen and peace,

Ignoring the sword with loud voice,

And so in time the sword did cease.

Dead silence from the sword and then

It's just the whisper of the pen.
