 The Elsies

William Carlos Williams wrote of

Elsie Borden, he later named

"To Elsie," who'd known little love,

Described in his poem which aimed

At 1920's culture in

The U.S. which victimized those

Like Elsie with much crime and sin,

And there seemed nothing to oppose

The mentally challenged and poor

Being such easy targets to

Be trusting and victimized more.

Elsie represented that's true.

Elsie, an orphaned nursemaid who be

Employed by the Williams' family.
