 The Desert Knows

In the desert their car broke down.

The young couple began to walk,

Hoping to find a farm or town.

Soon they felt weak from the sun's shock.

They drank all the water they had,

Stumbled toward far mirages seen,

Leaving the road, decision bad,

The desert beautiful, but mean.

They'd trudged across the blowing sand,

Until they could no further go,

Then clutching close together and

Facing what the desert did know.

Become living because of worst,

Become dying because of thirst.
