"The Dark Lady" was sonnetized

By William Shakespeare, a dark skinned

Lady of beauty who was prized

As a desired one the Bard penned.

This lady was not Shakespeare's wife,

Who must have known some about her.

But Mrs. Shakespeare was real life.

"The Dark Lady," who can be sure?

Apparently was not returned

The love and lust for her Will had.

Angry, painful verse as Will yearned

For this mistress who drove him mad.

Whoever "The Dark Lady" be,

Remains a source of mystery.
