Sense Sonnet - Acher

Hard Life

Twenty nine in this time and place.
Fathers, husbands, brothers and sons.
Coal miners lost in death's embrace,
Leaving behind grieving loved ones.
Generations have lived and died,
Mining the coal from rocky hills,
Having to dig down deep inside
The earth and souls, sharing the wills
To live this kind of life that's hard,
That outsiders will never know,
And only show passing regard
When tragedy dictates they show.

Coal mining takes away life's breath,
Ever looms the shadow of death.
