Foreign Fast

For 4 months, I was in Egypt,
As an exchange student, and stayed
With a host family that tripped
On a long food fasting crusade.
It was their religious belief
That the less food the more soul.
I tried to be without a beef,
And deem it just part of the whole
Opportunity for me to
Live lots of smells and sights and sounds,
Even though tastes were but a few.
I returned home less 60 pounds.

My host family said I ate
Too much, and that's why I lost weight.
