Sense Sonnet - Acher

The Soldier

The war was over at long last.
The news spread through the soldierhood.
The time of fear and pain was past.
The thought of going home felt good.
So many of us lost to death.
Luckily, I was spared that fate.
I took a deep and grateful breath.
It was a time to celebrate.
I shot my gun into the air.
The bullet came down through my head.
My friends and family were there.
I said goodbye, then I was dead.

An hour after war did cease,
I was a casualty of peace.
