 Orpheus and Eurydice

Orpheus loved Eurydice,

But she died and to Hades went.

The gods told Orpheus that he

Could go to Hades with assent

To play a song upon his lyre

So heartbreaking that Hades would

Allow Orpheus his desire,

Take Eurydice back, but could

Not look at her as both returned

From the underworld back to life.

But as they walked, Orpheus yearned

To be sure he was with his wife.

Orpheus looked back to be sure,

Whereupon Hades reclaimed her.
