Sense Sonnet - Steamer
Phillis Wheatley
Phillis Wheatley, a black slave who
Published a book of poetry.
General Washington asked her to
Visit his Cambridge camp and she,
In seventeen seventy six,
Met with the future President,
A slave and owner intermix,
To hopefully set precedent.
The Revolutionary War -
Fighting for freedom did be won.
But slavery continued more
And a slave, Phillis still was one.
Famous for poetry she gave,
In time and place she stayed a slave.
