Sense Sonnet - Chiller
Jumpin' Devils
Once a year in the month of June,
A centuries old baptismal rite
In a Spanish village commune,
Costumed and masked "devils" take flight,
Jumping over in the street - who?
Babies born the previous year,
All laid down, and the "devils" do
Absorb all sin as the crowds cheer.
A Catholic and pagan blend
Of ritual - triumph of good
Over evil, message to send,
Better than sprinkling water would.
Water or "devil" leap the goal
To cleanse the sin from a young soul?
