Sense Sonnet - Steamer

Pikes Peak

For eons a great mountain peak,
When Zebulon Pike, winter time,
"Discovered" it first, so to speak,
In 1806. Why not climb
Fourteen thousand plus feet high.
Pike with his expedition did
Start climbing up and up - but why!
Not a very well thought out bid.
After two days of waist deep snow,
And of bellies empty of food,
Back down the mountain Pike did go,
Leaving his name and the peak screwed.

Pike did nothing for claim to fame.
Great mountain, mediocre name.
