Tiny Consumers

They thought that the planet might be
Capable of sustaining life.
So they landed, and they did see
Evidence of turmoil and strife.
Ruins showing life forms once were,
And apparently did evolve.
But mass extinction did occur,
And why that happened they did solve.
A certain bacteria strain
Ate anything that it could find,
And gobbled up the whole food chain -
All the plant and animal kind.

They did find, for what it was worth,
Just bacteria lived on Earth.
