Sense Sonnet - Pumper

Ponderosa

When I am a century old,
I begin to shed my black bark,
And a yellow bark does unfold.
Why the change is a question mark.
And from this new bark comes the scent
That smells of cookies freshly baked.
My bark is layered to present
A jigsawed pattern loosely flaked,
Meant to fly off if fire does strike,
So that my body stays alive,
And I continue with my like,
In needled forestry to thrive.

I come from a most proud sapline.
I am the Ponderosa pine.
